Dear ladies and gentlemen,
This newsletter is the start of a new series for new leaders.
Gunther Fürstberger, Managing Partner of MDI, demonstrates the changes new leaders are faced with in the actual photo story.
Consciously letting go
Question:
„Gunther, according to your opinion, what are the biggest changes for a new leader? “
Gunther:
„Being a product manager, for example, I would spend up to 90% of my time with expert activities. Once I become a leader, I also have to deal with leadership and management tasks. Hence I have to let go my expert side in order to have time for these new tasks.”
Balancing act between distance and closeness
Question:
„What else are new leaders faced with in their new role? “
Gunther:
„Many new leaders wonder how near or distanced they should or may be.
You can still have good relations with former colleagues but it is not possible any more to fraternize by e.g. negatively talking about the company strategy. Because, to a certain degree, you are now the mouthpiece of the above management level. This means that you switch from a very personal, friendly relationship to a more distanced one.”
These famous first 100 days
Question:
„What about these famous first 100 days? “
Gunther:
„It is about three months, i.e. 100 days that a new leader is on trial concerning trust, credibility and competences. It is advisable not to start big changes straight away but to mainly observe and learn.”
